WPD Blocker: Review Rules Before Restricting Connections

WPD’s blocker restricts selected connections. A rule can affect useful traffic as well as the traffic you intended to limit, so record its scope and rollback before enabling it.

Read the rule category and its origin

The bundled README distinguishes blocker rules from ordinary privacy switches and refers to third-party IP-list data. The project homepage displays an IP-list date of May 22, 2022; that displayed date is not proof of freshness for a network destination today. Inspect the actual rule information available in your application.

Make a controlled blocker test

  1. Confirm Windows Update, account sign-in, Store access, and any required work application function before the change.
  2. Export the existing Windows Firewall policy and record the blocker mode you are using. A Windows Firewall export does not document every possible third-party WFP filter.
  3. Enable only the single rule category you intend to evaluate. Save its exact name and the time of the change.
  4. Repeat the same baseline tasks. If a service fails, disable that particular restriction and check whether the service recovers.

Do not stack filtering modes blindly

Windows Firewall rules and other Windows Filtering Platform filters are not interchangeable views of one list. A rule absent from the firewall console may still be associated with another filtering provider. Prefer the originating utility’s documented rollback rather than indiscriminately deleting network filters.

Questions and answers

Does a blocker replace antivirus?

No. Restricting selected network destinations is not malware detection or an operating-system security update.

Does an old IP-list date prove the current rules are correct?

No. It is a reason to inspect provenance and test the specific behavior before relying on the list.
