Windows 11 Privacy Settings: A Practical Review

Begin a Windows 11 privacy review in Settings → Privacy & security. Choose what individual apps and features may do, while keeping Windows Update and security protection working. No additional privacy utility is required for these built-in controls.

Make decisions by feature, not by a disable-all target

AreaQuestion to answerCheck afterward
Diagnostics & feedbackDo you want to contribute optional diagnostics?Reopen the control and confirm the recorded choice.
Camera and microphoneWhich apps need recording access?Make a test call in the app you intend to keep.
LocationWhich features need precise location?Check the specific map, weather, or device-location feature.
Recommendations & offers / GeneralWhich personalization options do you want?Check the current page name on your build.
SearchDo you need local files, cloud results, or both?Search for one local file and one expected cloud item.
Account and syncWhich data should move between devices?Review the specific account or application settings.

A low-disruption sequence

  1. Record your Windows build and list the applications you rely on. Save your current settings before changing them.
  2. Review optional diagnostic sharing separately from app permissions. These categories do not replace one another.
  3. Change one unused app permission rather than disabling the device feature for every app.
  4. Inspect the available recommendation settings. Recent Windows 11 versions can show Recommendations & offers instead of General.
  5. Test everyday use and restore the previous value when an intended feature fails.

What this checklist does not cover automatically

Windows controls do not determine every browser cookie, application account setting, cloud retention rule, or data practice of a desktop program. Review the settings inside those products separately. Newer Windows features may also have their own privacy pages; a legacy WPD switch list is not a complete inventory of current Windows features.

Avoid confusing privacy with security

Do not remove Defender, turn off the firewall, or block update services merely to increase the count of disabled options. Your useful result is a documented set of choices that preserves required functionality, not a claim that the computer sends no data.

Questions and answers

Do I need WPD to change these settings?

No. The controls described in this checklist are built into Windows. WPD is an optional utility with a different interface and additional considerations.

Why does my Settings page say Recommendations & offers?

Microsoft has replaced the General privacy page on newer Windows 11 versions. Use the page actually available on your build.
